Sixth Grade Classroom Management

Things to remember:

  • Notebooks and planners will be carried to every class
  • Planners should be filled out daily and signed weekly
  • Check the Supply List to make sure everything is at school
  • Homework will be given and are expected to be completed before it is due

Color Charts:

In order to provide every child with a safe and comfortable learning environment, the school has established a discipline policy which I feel works quite well.

All students are expected to follow the school-wide and classroom rules. School-wide rules are found in your handbook. Classroom rules are posted in our room.

I would like to explain the way the elementary school's policy of using color changes to track behavior works. Every child begins each day on a green on the class chart. The first time a rule is broken, the student changes the green slip to a yellow strip. Yellow strips are for minor infractions and mean a loss of five minutes of recess. I do give yellow strips for incomplete work, planner not signed, talking at inappropriate times. Please remember that five minutes of recess is a small price to pay for building resonsibility in your child.

The second time a rule is broken that same day, or in the case of a larger infraction (improper language, not keeping hands to yourself, etc.) the student changes their color to a red. This should remind him or her to stop the inappropriate behavior immediately. Red strips mean a loss of all recess.

The third time a rule is broken that same day, or in case of a major infraction (haven't had one for an example) the student must change their color to a blue.

Many children struggle in the area of work completion and responsibility, so please take extra care with your child in this area! Also, please remember that this policy does not include excused absences, or emergencies. I am not unreasonable in this area. If your child has an emergency and cannot finish assignments for one day, please send me a note to confirm this. That way, no strip will be given, and other arrangements will be made for work to be completed. Thanks!

I hope this helps clarify my approach to discipline. I feel this approach helps the child to visually track his or her behavior. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Below, please find the list of rules displayed in my room. These rules do not encompass all situations, but are general guidelines for classroom behavior.

Class Rules:

  • Follow directions the first time they are given
  • Respect People and Property
  • Keep your feet and hands to yourself
  • Be prepared at ALL times
  • Be kind, considerate and patient to others

Sticker Charts:

Students will receive stickers from any teacher. The stickers will be placed on his or hersticker chart. A full chart may turned for a reward or kept until the student is ready to redeem it.

  • Following rules
  • Respecting others
  • Using time wisely
  • Anytime you are “caught” being good

When a chart is full, students can turn in thier charts for selected rewards. As soon as these rewards are decided, they will be posted.
